1. Scope
1.1 This specification covers generally recognized require- ments for the cautionary labeling to be placed on extension poles manufactured or sold, or both, for the use with paint preparation and application tools. This specification does not address any other labeling, construction, or safety require- ments. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses after SI units are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro- priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter- mine the applicability ofregulatory limitations prior to use. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accor- dance with internationally recognized principles on standard- ization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recom- mendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
3. Terminology
3.1 Definitions ofTerms Specific to This Standard: 3.1.1 extension pole, n—long, slender piece or pieces of wood, metal, plastic, composite, or combination of materials, having a fixed or adjustable length and a threaded tip or other means of attaching a paint applicator or preparation tool to one end, used to increase reach. 3.1.2 label, n—refers to but is not limited to a decal or self adhesive piece of paper, plastic or metal which contains the warning information. 3.1.3 paint applicator tool, n—brush, roller, or other tool used to apply, spread and smooth paint onto a surface. 3.1.4 paint preparation tool, n—scraper, wire brush, scrub brush, or other tool used to prepare a surface to be painted.
4. Significance and Use
4.1 Warning labels on extension poles will alert the end user of the product to potential of serious electrical shock injury if the product is used too close to electrical power lines.
5. Requirements
5.1 General: 5.1.1 The warning label can be incorporated with a product label. 5.1.2 The warning label must be constructed of a material that is water and solvent resistant and be permanently affixed to the extension pole. 5.1.3 The warning and product label must cover at least 75 % of the circumference of the extension pole (for example, an extension pole that is 2.54 cm (1 in.) in diameter shall have a label that is at least 5.98 cm (2.356 in.) wide). 5.2 Label: 5.2.1 The warning portion of the label shall be trilingual (English, French, Spanish). See Table 1 for translations. 5.2.2 The warning portion of the label shall incorporate a black border that separates it from any other information on the label. 5.2.3 The warning portion of the label shall incorporate a vertical or horizontal three panel design containing three components: (1) a signal word, (2) symbol/pictorial panel, and (3) word message (see Fig. 1 for example). 5.2.4 The signal word panel shall have a safety orange background with black lettering and contain the word “WARN- ING” in uppercase boldface letters at least 12 point type (approximately 4 mm (0.157 in.) in height), preceded by a black equilateral triangle with a safety orange exclamation point inside it. The base of the triangle shall line up with the base of the signal word, and shall equal or exceed the signal word in height.5.2.5 The symbol/pictorial panel shall have a white back- ground with a black outlined equilateral triangle at least 1.27 cm (0.5 in.) in height containing a black lightning bolt inside it, see Fig. 1 for example. 5.2.6 The word message shall have a white background with black lettering and contain the words:5.2.8 Acceptable styles of letter shall include Arial, Arial Bold, Folio Medium, Franklin Gothic, Helvetica Bold, Meta Bold, News Gothic Bold, Poster Gothic, and Univers.
